AEK BC is preparing for the “Andreas Varikas” tournament. In the opening game at Glyfada Indoor Hall “Makis Liougas,” for an obviously pleasant reason, “memories awaken.”
Tomorrow (Friday, 19/09, 20:00), AEK will face a team with whom it shares… a 57-year history, Varese!
On March 14, 1968, AEK defeated the then-mighty (Ignis) Varese 72-52 in front of 50,000 spectators at the Panathenaic Stadium, overturning the 78-60 result of the first leg and securing qualification for the Cup Winners’ Cup Final, which it went on to win. It was Giorgos Trontzos, with his legendary reverse shot, who scored the basket that sealed the qualification. The famous Varese side -after that loss- went on to win five European Champions Cups by 1976!
